"Cold Water" is about coming together to face adversity and to say that you have your partner's back no matter what the situation is.
Diplo and Justin Bieber hinted abbout the song through some cryptic tweets. Diplo then annouced to Fact Mag that "Cold Water" would be premiered on his Beats 1 radio show Lazer Sound "sometime Summer 2016."
In early July, Justin annouced their collaboration on the projet with a tweet:
